04:58:29<mhausenblas_>morning Web of Data
04:59:18<PovAddict>night Web of Data
05:03:01<mhausenblas_>hehe. good to be home again ;)
07:19:31<mhausenblas_>http://www.slideshare.net/mediasemanticweb/eswc-2009-lightning-talks
07:19:49<mhausenblas_>A: ESWC 2009 Lightning Talks
07:20:48<mhausenblas_>A: heads-up - the talks will be soon available on http://videolectures.net/
07:20:54<mhausenblas_>A:| ESWC 2009 Lightning Talks
07:21:29<mhausenblas_>A1= collection of slide sets
07:21:36<mhausenblas_>A1: collection of slide sets
08:41:02<mhausenblas_>hu? sameas.org down?
08:41:12<mhausenblas_>http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/sameas.org says not only for me ...
08:41:24<mhausenblas_>hg around?
08:50:34<hg>yes
08:51:24<mhausenblas_>hey there hg
08:51:39<mhausenblas_>did you notice that sameas.org is down?
08:51:52<hg>The way of the world: You announce the new sameAs.org service, and then the entire campus has a power blackout. :-(
08:52:16<mhausenblas_>hehe. I certainly know what you're talking about ;)
08:52:36<mhausenblas_>our service unit decided to do the server update during ESWC
08:52:40<hg>Even http://www.soton.ac.uk/
08:53:03<mhausenblas_>to be more precisely a two hour down time during the ESWC demo (!) session
08:53:15<hg>Now that is really annoying.
08:53:22<mhausenblas_>yeah, noticed that earlier as well but didn't get the connection
08:54:00<mhausenblas_>well, good to know that this is just the 'usual' annoyance around server/power/etc. being down
08:54:03<mhausenblas_>thanks anyway
08:54:26<mhausenblas_>awesome thing, btw
08:54:46<hg>Yeah, sorry. And it is now 18 hours. No email, nuttin'. Starting to get withdrawal.
08:55:18<hg>Many thanks.
08:55:28<mhausenblas_>np. awesome service. and to be absolutely self-critical on our end: this is what the OKKAM chaps should have delivered months ago ;)
08:55:45<hg>;-)
08:56:13<mhausenblas_>so I conclude: some people discuss/think about stuff and others deliver. full stop. :D
08:56:36<hg>But actually, the okkam service is also another needed service.
08:56:57<mhausenblas_>yeah, well, true, but you know ...
08:57:13<mhausenblas_>anyways. ESWC was sort of fun
08:57:29<mhausenblas_>beside the stupidity for next year
08:58:33<marcotanzi>hi folks... I'm pretty new on open calais and I would ask you some tips :-)
08:58:50<mhausenblas_>hg, did you hear th great news already?
08:58:52<hg>stupidity? tell me more
08:58:57<mhausenblas_>(1) will be renamed to Extended SWC (what the heck ?) and 2. same location, again (why, the heck ...)
08:59:17<mhausenblas_>can you imagine this?
08:59:29<hg>Yeah, location was one reason I didn't go - also wanted to do work... :-D
09:00:57<hg>marcotanzi: I don't know much, but if you try some Qs someone may?
09:01:42<hg>mhausenblas_: Extended SWC? Huh?
09:01:58<mhausenblas_>marcotanzi has left again, btw
09:02:04<hg>Ah.
09:02:09<mhausenblas_>yeah, pretty weird he?
09:02:28<mhausenblas_>next we'll learn that ISWC stands for Integrated SWC
09:02:35<hg>Waroom?
09:02:43<mhausenblas_>(just kidding)
09:02:49<nonsonoinmatrix>I've started to play with Open Calais and parse text to fetch the entities
09:02:52<hg>You mean it doesn't?
09:02:58<drrho>mhausenblas: what was the rational for the renaming?
09:03:05<drrho>are you on the steering committee?
09:03:07<nonsonoinmatrix>opss.. I've changed nam :-)
09:03:09<mhausenblas_>no, the Extended is serious
09:03:22<drrho>s/rational/rationale/
09:03:25<mhausenblas_>ah, so nonsonoinmatrix is marcotanzi, right?
09:03:32<mhausenblas_>drrho: no, I'm not
09:03:57<drrho>hmm.
09:04:07<mhausenblas_>re rationale: I guess to look smarter, opener, fresher, whatsoever
09:04:15<nonsonoinmatrix>Btw... I'd like to know if from the opencalasi RDF is possible get directly the link to other data like freebase or dbpedia
09:04:19<drrho>sheesh. :-)
09:04:23<hg>I don't see the need to change things when they work - I couldn't see why ESWS -> ESWC
09:04:28<mhausenblas_>but drrho you have been at the closing ceremony no?
09:04:45<drrho>no, had an intense discussion with some Ph.D. student.
09:04:47<nonsonoinmatrix>yes.. I prefer this nick .-)
09:05:08<mhausenblas_>ah, ok, drrho - Lora announced it there (the new general chair)
09:05:13<drrho>ACTION prefers discussions over ceremonies ;-)
09:05:23<mhausenblas_>hehe
09:05:44<mhausenblas_>ok, let's be productive - nonsonoinmatrix what's your question? ;)
09:06:19<drrho>Well, to quote the "Hr. Direktor": This is not the end of the story.
09:07:13<mhausenblas_>hm. let's see. I decided to not engage too much in The-conference-formerly-known-as-the-European-SWC stuff
09:07:18<hg>nonsonoinmatrix: Good question. That is exactly what sameAs.org is meant to provide for you :-) I did look at trying to get opencalais into sameAs.org, but ran out of time trying to work out how to find the URIs.
09:07:46<mhausenblas_>hg, got opencalias in CRS?
09:07:51<hg>Nope.
09:07:57<mhausenblas_>you should! :)
09:08:11<drrho>mhausenblas: Right. I managed to stay out of politics and will not engage now.
09:08:25<mhausenblas_>drrho++
09:08:30<hg>Or at least, don't know that I have :-) But haven't got anything from that source.
09:08:33<nonsonoinmatrix>I have found the way to get this data... but is not directly... there are at least 3 step with lot of delay...
09:09:27<mhausenblas_>ACTION grabs some coffee ... BRB
09:12:02<nonsonoinmatrix>so far the only way I've found is: from the RDF I can go on the open calais page of the entity... from this page you can chose the disambiguated entity (like Paris in france and not Paris in the US)... from the Paris(France) page you can go to the sameAs links (freebase, dbpedia, etc)
09:14:09<nonsonoinmatrix>I'd like to get the sameAs link straight from the RDF
09:14:20<hg>So would I :-)
09:14:57<nonsonoinmatrix>there is no short cut to get this data?
09:17:54<hg>I'm sure someone else can give you a more definitive answer, but I suspect that you can if you script it. I'm lloking at their code at the moment.
09:19:32<nonsonoinmatrix>what you mean? create a function that call the chain of link?
09:25:14<nonsonoinmatrix>hg: BTW... do you know if there is some other service like open calais that do this?
09:26:42<hg>Ben having another look, and there is stuff around eg http://petewarden.typepad.com/searchbrowser/2008/07/try-out-opencal.html but can't get it to work.
09:28:03<hg>nonsonoinmatrix, you want to eg find dbpedia URIs for the opencalais URIs?
09:28:57<nonsonoinmatrix>hg: yes... I'd like to get the freebase... but also DBpedia it will be fine...
09:29:34<nonsonoinmatrix>hg: not from opencalais URLs... from the RDF generated by the web services
09:30:11<hg>nonsonoinmatrix, :-) I have to smile. That is exactly what our new sameAs.org service is meant to do for you, and if someone hadn't cut the mains cable to my university yesterday you would be able to go and look at it :-(
09:32:55<hg>But I need to get the opencalais data, or they need to publish it for us. One of the ideas of "launching" it and giving it a name was that it might now be in their business interest to do that. And we need to guardian as well. (BBC are providing data.)
09:33:13<hg>s/to guardian/the Guardian/
09:36:49<nonsonoinmatrix>hg: this link (to freebase) is not available so far from the RDF, is it?
09:40:10<hg>nonsonoinmatrix, don't understand, sorry
09:41:32<nonsonoinmatrix>hg: Is the sameAs.org sarvice already availabe?
09:42:05<hg>Yes. Or rather, there's a power cut, so no.
09:50:19<hg>I've put an unformatted version of the about page at http://www.wrpmo.com/hugh/sameAs-about.html - sorry, but the best I can do.
09:52:20<hg>And a picture at http://www.wrpmo.com/hugh/sameas.tiff
09:58:28<nonsonoinmatrix>very interesting! bookmarked! :-)
10:00:08<hg>Thanks. The power has been out for 18 hours now, so I have a horrible feeling it will be longer. Hope it doesn't hit the 48 hours. I'll try to remember to report to you when it gets back.
10:01:53<nonsonoinmatrix>nice... let see it is gonna solve all my problem :-)
10:02:37<nonsonoinmatrix>I'll stay tuned!
10:12:00<nonsonoinmatrix>hg: do you have some end-point API?
10:13:48<hg>Only what is shown.
10:14:00<hg>Is that an API? :-)
10:15:21<nonsonoinmatrix>yes, indeed the are... :-)
10:18:43<nonsonoinmatrix>I was looking on the result you provide, I didn't see freebase...
10:19:58<hg>Equivalent URIs for http://dbpedia.org/resource/AC_Ace
10:19:58<hg>1.http://dbpedia.org/resource/AC_Ace
10:19:58<hg>2.http://mpii.de/yago/resource/AC_Ace
10:19:59<hg>3.http://rdf.freebase.com/ns/guid.9202a8c04000641f800000000021a56a
10:19:59<hg>4.http://umbel.org/umbel/ne/wikipedia/AC_Ace
10:22:56<nonsonoinmatrix>Just to be more clear... What is the result for this API call http://sameas.org/?q=London ?
10:25:30<hg>It looks up the string London on Sindice, and gets back the URIs from the first page. It then looks up those URIs in its internal DB of equivalences, groups, them, adds any other, and then displays them as bundles of sameAs, each of which looks like the bundles above, with links for the rdf, N3, etc.
10:36:54<nonsonoinmatrix>sounds great!!
10:37:20<nonsonoinmatrix>so in the result is also present the freebase link!
10:39:01<nonsonoinmatrix>I'm looking forward to see the service online!!!
10:39:22<hg>So am I :-)
11:37:18<drrho>mhausenblas_: will you upload the lightening talks slides somewhere?
11:37:46<drrho>no hurry. just curious.
11:51:39<kwijibo>ACTION lols at http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/244855/nordkapp-north-cape.html entry for night life: In summer there is no night, in winter there is no life.
11:59:25<mhausenblas_>drrho: did already :)
12:00:02<mhausenblas_>drrho, see http://chatlogs.planetrdf.com/swig/2009-06-06.html#T08-19-29
12:01:25<drrho>ahh. perfect! thx.
12:14:13<mhausenblas_>yw, drrho
13:48:53<melvster>anyone know a good resource that explains the difference between rdf:about rdf:ID and rdf:nodeID ?
14:57:23<mhausenblas_>melvster: something like http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/Europe/200407/swintro/syntaxdesign.html ?
14:59:07<mhausenblas_>as well as http://esw.w3.org/mt/esw/archives/000034.html maybe, melvster ?
15:00:04<melvster>mhausenblas: thanks!
15:00:51<mhausenblas_>yw, melvster
15:01:34<melvster>i want to remove all my bnodes, and then do edit in place over rdfa to produce and send sparql updates
15:04:03<melvster>if the browser sends the updates, then you can do authentication of the user agent, and check that the resource is writeable by that agent, using a webaccesscontrol file
15:05:33<melvster>in this way you can edit your own triples or permission certain groups to, just using a straight browser and html
15:25:14<hg>nonsonoinmatrix, looks like http://sameas.org/ is back
15:27:45<nonsonoinmatrix>hg: thanks... I'll try it later... now I'll be off for a while .-)
15:55:59<mhausenblas_>melvster: removing bnodes? should work with rdfquery
15:57:11<mhausenblas_>IIRC, Jeni's included something like the SPARQL's isBlank() operator
15:58:54<mhausenblas_>melvster: you may also wanna ping oshani, she has done stuff in Tabulator already ...
15:59:26<mhausenblas_>melvster: you know about http://events.linkeddata.org/ldow2008/papers/11-berners-lee-hollenbach-tabulator-redux.pdf right?
16:33:21<melvster>mhausenblas: yes, thanks, hopefully my pages will look quite like tabulator when finished, im starting with simple jquery, but will probably switch to rdfquery
21:54:59<mhausenblas_>good night Web of Data
